Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers about Warzag, your account and your Mac.
Can I play Warframe on a Mac?
Yes. Warframe has no Mac version, so Warzag installs the Windows version with Digital Extremes' own installer and runs it on your Mac. You need a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and you sign in with Steam or your Warframe account.
Warzag is free and open source, and Warframe is free to play. The first-launch guide shows every step.
Which Macs can play Warframe with Warzag?
Macs with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, such as a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio or Mac Pro with an M1 chip or newer. Warzag also needs 80 GB of free disk space, and it picks graphics settings to suit your Mac.
Warzag doesn't run on Macs with an Intel processor.
Is it safe for my Warframe account?
Warzag runs the unchanged Windows version of Warframe. It never modifies the game's files, memory or network traffic, and only Digital Extremes' own launcher downloads and updates the game. You sign in through Steam's own window or Warframe's login screen, so Warzag never sees your passwords.
Warframe also runs on the Steam Deck through Valve's Proton, which is built on Wine, like Warzag's engine. Warzag is an unofficial project, though, so it can't speak for Digital Extremes.
Why do I have to click Open Anyway?
Apple notarizes apps only for members of its paid developer program. Warzag is a free community project and isn't notarized, so macOS asks you to confirm it once. Notarization doesn't change how an app works.
Warzag is still signed, with the project's own certificate, and you can check your download against its SHA-256 checksum. The first-launch guide shows every step.
How do I check my download?
Open Terminal and run:
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Warzag.dmg
The long code it prints should match the one in Warzag.dmg.sha256, which comes with each release. If it doesn't, delete the file and download it again.
Can I install Warzag without the Open Anyway step?
Yes, if you're comfortable with Terminal. This command downloads the same Warzag.dmg, checks its SHA-256 checksum and copies Warzag into your Applications folder:
curl -fsSL https://github.com/MAlMazrou/warzag/
Files downloaded in Terminal aren't marked as coming from the internet, so macOS doesn't ask. The installer doesn't need your password and doesn't open anything it downloads. You can read it first: it's part of the source code.
Do I need Rosetta?
No. Warzag's engine runs natively on Apple silicon. Warframe's Windows code is translated inside the engine by FEX, an open-source emulator, so Rosetta is never installed or used. Apple plans to limit Rosetta after macOS 27, so Warzag was built not to need it.
Do I need Steam?
Steam is the simplest way: Warzag uses your normal Mac Steam app to sign you in, and installs Steam from Valve if it's missing.
You can also play without Steam. Choose Use a Warframe Account Instead when Warzag offers to install Steam, or switch in Warzag's Settings, then sign in with your Warframe email and password. If Warframe offers to link your account to Steam, remember that Digital Extremes treats the link as permanent.
Can I play the iPhone version of Warframe on my Mac?
No. On the App Store, Warframe's mobile version is offered for iPhone and iPad only, not for Mac. Warzag runs the Windows version instead.
Are there other ways to play Warframe on a Mac?
Yes, a few:
- CrossOver, a paid app from CodeWeavers, also runs the Windows version.
- GeForce NOW streams the game from NVIDIA's servers, so it works on Macs with an Intel processor too. It needs a fast internet connection, and its free tier limits how long you can play at a time.
- Free tools such as Sikarugir let you set up Wine and the Windows version yourself.
Older guides suggest Whisky, whose development ended in 2025, or Boot Camp, which works only on Macs with an Intel processor.
How do updates work?
- Warzag and its engine: Warzag checks for new versions of both once a day. To check now, choose Warzag > Check for Updates, or click Updates on Home and then Check for Updates. When a new version is out, click Update: Warzag downloads it, checks its signature and installs it. Your game and settings stay where they are, and Warzag keeps the previous engine in case the new one has a problem.
- Warframe: Digital Extremes' own launcher installs updates before each Play, just like on Windows. To update it sooner, click Update Now in the Updates window.
What changed in each version of Warzag is on the Changes page.
Does Warzag collect any data?
No. Warzag has no analytics or ads, and you don't create an account with it. It downloads Steam from Valve, Warframe's installer from Digital Extremes and its engine from the Warzag project. Diagnostics leave your Mac only if you export them and send them yourself.
This website has no cookies, trackers or analytics either.
Something isn't working. Where can I get help?
In Warzag, choose Help > Troubleshoot. It checks free space, Steam, the game files and Warzag's Windows setup, and can repair that setup. If that doesn't help, click Export Diagnostics and attach the report to a new issue on GitHub.
How do I uninstall Warzag?
- Quit Warzag.
- Drag Warzag from Applications to the Trash.
- To free the space Warframe uses, also delete the folder
~/Library/Application Support/Warzag. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder, paste the path and press Return. You can delete~/Library/Caches/Warzagand~/Library/Logs/Warzagthe same way.
Steam stays installed. Your Warframe account and progress are kept on Digital Extremes' servers, so removing Warzag doesn't affect them.
Where is the source code?
On GitHub: github.com/MAlMazrou/warzag. Warzag is free software under the GPL-3.0 license, so you can read it, build it and change it. Its engine is built on Wine, FEX and DXMT, with a Steam bridge from Valve's Proton; each part keeps its own license.
